Quick Answer
In freezing temperatures, your boiler's condensate pipe may freeze, causing the boiler to shut down. This is common in West Midlands winters.
Complete Guide
Frozen condensate pipes are one of the most common winter boiler problems. Here's how to identify and fix the issue:
**What is the Condensate Pipe?**
Modern condensing boilers produce acidic water (condensate) as a byproduct. This drains outside through a small plastic pipe, usually white or grey.
**How to Identify a Frozen Pipe:**
- Boiler displays error code (common codes: F1, F28, E133)
- Gurgling sound from boiler
- Boiler locks out and won't restart
- Freezing temperatures outside
**Safe DIY Fix:**
1. **Locate the pipe** - Usually exits through an external wall near the boiler
2. **Pour warm water** - NOT boiling! Use lukewarm water and pour over the frozen section
3. **Use a hot water bottle** - Place against the pipe to thaw gradually
4. **Reset the boiler** - Once thawed, press the reset button
**Prevention Tips:**
- **Insulate the pipe** - Foam lagging from any DIY store (we can do this during your annual service)
- **Run heating overnight** - During cold snaps, keep heating on low to prevent freezing
- **Increase pipe diameter** - We can upgrade to 32mm pipe which freezes less easily
**When to Call Us:**
- Pipe is frozen inside the wall
- You can't locate the condensate pipe
- Boiler won't restart after thawing
- Multiple freeze-ups in one winter (may need rerouting)
**Common in West Midlands:**
Wolverhampton, Cannock, and Stafford regularly see temperatures below -5°C in winter. We recommend insulating condensate pipes before November.
